Twisted Illusion is VOKCHOI’s first collection. It was drawn from a snake that later stories turned into a monster, a creature made to lose what it once was, under a patriarchal reading of the world.

Before Greek myth, there was a Mother Earth who did not belong to one sex. Looking after earth and sky without dividing them, that presence took the form of a snake, its body covered in scales. The shedding of skin, leaving one life for another, was once seen as her own power of return. As the myth was bent into patriarchy, that figure was twisted, and the snake became monstrous.

The collection takes back what was lost in that distortion: the snake’s first mystery and complexity. It is made to remember Mother Nature at the beginning, and to carry something of that older god, close to the body.

Drawn from nature, Flower Study was made as the work itself flowed, one form opening into the next.

The photographs were made with Hyejin Jang. Together they found a lightness in the frame, images that still feel close to the garden they came from.

A garden where something is always beginning: seeds, leaves, a path walked slowly. Those forms are recast in VOKCHOI’s language, to be worn as a small delight in ordinary days.
